One Potato, Two Potato...I remember that one!

Ok...you can call it what you want...a senior moment, a brain freeze...forgetfulness...but I know what the problem is...and it has nothing to do with shrinking brain cells!

You see I decided to make a potato salad yesterday - just a simple dish. I peeled and chopped the potatoes, onion and celery, added the dijon mustard, mayo and spices, stirred it up, all the while admiring my fine work...and then it happened...as I lifted the spoon to my mouth for the obligatory "taste test"...that little dim light, that was apparently in sleep mode, turned on with a flash!

WARNING * WARNING * WARNING* DO NOT EAT * DO NOT EAT*

...indeed...I had forgotten to boil the potatoes! They were completely raw, uncooked!
And the salad was finished!
"How could I be so stupid?", I thought. "Seriously...forget to cook the potatoes?" "Really?"
...and then I peered around to see if anyone was watching. Whew...I'm safe.

But I will not accept defeat and I will not admit to a diminished supply of active brain cells.
It's just that my brain is FULL - in fact it is overflowing with 53 years of names, facts, recipes and other useless information (until you play Trivial Pursuit that is).
It has become impossible for me to cram in anything else without shedding something first!
Let's see...I could let go of that poem I recited in third grade...and I certainly don't need my bike lock combo from Jr. High School...and what about the names of my old boyfriends (well perhaps I could keep a couple of those)...but if I toss out the "two all beef patties, special sauce..." commercial and my body fat number from 1985...I just might remember to pick up my daughter from school, put the milk away in the fridge rather than the pantry and still win on Cash Cab!

Just think of the valuable space I would gain! See I am not getting old...just full!
Isn't that wonderful? I feel so much better.

Oh...what did I do with my potato salad - you ask? Well I considered serving "Hot Potato Salad"...after all it tasted great...but I cooked it up, of course...and then I chilled it for a couple of hours...and you know... no one was the wiser...
Except for my brother who came in and asked for a bite just as I realized my little faux pas...
"Don't even ask" I said, as I refused his request... and we both just laughed!

  3. Well Carrie I have never done that one yet. And since I have basically quit cooking I may not do it.

The dish looks hillarious though because you can totally tell the potatos are raw.

    Great story.

  6. Oh Carrie...unfortunately I can sooooo relate. I'm 48 and I am constantly having those not so cute senior moments. It drives me crazy!!! I once considered myself to be a smart woman. Now that I can't even finish a sentence without losing my train of thought I just sound like a dumb blonde all the time!!!

Thanks for sharing your cute story...knowing I am not alone provides me with a bit of comfort!!!

    Have a wonderful Monday!!!
    XOXO

  11. Funny, funny. I love - not old, just full. I have often though that. Nowadays we have so much more to remember that never had to be remembered years ago. What about all the passwords and pin #s that we have to remember at the drop of a hat?? Our parents certainly never had to do that. Great post, Carrie!

  12. You just made a lot of us so happy. We all wander around thinking we are the only one that does stuff like that. Luckily, I know I use to do 'absent minded' things even as a youngster, so I don't really fear that I am over the edge. (o:

  13. I LOVE it Carrie!!!
Reminds me of the time I made a tuna casserole for supper and about half way through it Scott finally said, "This is real good, but where's the tuna?"
And I was only in my early 30's at the time. I chalked it upto a blonde moment. But I like the idea of just being too full better!

  14. Oh Mylanta!! This is so funny, and I love how you wrote it!! You could be one of those female humorist writers like Barbara Johnson you know..."Normal is Just a Setting on Your Dryer" or "Splashes of Joy in the Cesspool of Life" I'm serious!!

I haven't done this, but I did forget to turn on the oven one year when cooking the Christmas ham!! Needless to say dinner was a little late!! Fortunately it was a heat and eat!!

I have been known to admit sometimes that I have 2 brain cells left and even they are waving buh-bye to each other!!!

    Thanks for the laughs!!

    Hugs!!

  18. that is hilarious. i used to beg for pieces of raw potato from my mother when i was a child. but i don't think even the young me would have wanted to eat an entire raw potato salad.

  19. How funny, Carrie! Thanks for telling us about it instead of keeping it to yourself! ☺ You'd think something would have clicked as you chopped through those raw potatoes! Ha- ha! Isn't the brain and memory an amazing thing?

Just yesterday I was humming a song that I recognized but didn't remember- make sense? I asked my boy, "What song was that?" He grinned and said, "Inspector Gadget!" You see, *last week* He had watched Inspector Gadget but with the head phones on so I didn't hear anything. I probably had not heard the theme song for that cartoon in over 20 years but just knowing he was watching it must have juggled my brain cells up enough to bring up the tune a week later! ♥

  21. I have totally believed that for a while, heehe. I am not getting old, my memory card is just full. I have moved 16 times since I met my husband. We have lived in 9 different cities..that means I have had to remember where everything gets put away in 16 homes, how to get to the grochery store, church, etc...in 9 different cities. That is a lot of junk to keep stored!! Thanks for sharing, heehe!

  23. Oh Carrie!
I could have daily entries like this...those poor lucky people who get to work with me, deal with this stuff on a daily basis with me. I think Gingko Biloba is supposed to help with memory. Maybe you and I should split a Costco size flat of it?!?! He he he!

  27. Carrie,
Thanks for stopping by today!!! I think I have enough lemon bars left from my lunch to share;)!!! We had a great time!!!

I lived in California twice. The first time as a child for about 8 years and the second time with my husband for almost 10. My parents were there for about 30. We LOVE it there and go back as often as possible!!! How long were you there? When did you move? We have some really good friends in Bend. They love it there. They moved to Oregon about the same time we moved to Texas.

I hope you are having a wonderful day and I look forward to hearing from you again!!!
    XOXO

  29. Oh, I was happy to read this. So glad I'm not the only one. I once made "Ham & Noodle Casserole" (a favorite family recipe for years) and managed to forget the ham. LOL Glad you were able to salvage your potato salad! = )
