Cupcakes may indeed be the "craze"...but of course they have been around forever...
Here is a simple cupcake from an O'Keefe & Merritt Cookbook from 1937!
Complete with advice for the housewife suffering from
"kitchen fog"!
Cupcakes
Sift 2 cups flour, 2 tsps. baking powder and 1/2 tea. salt. Cream 1 cup sugar and 2 eggs.
Add 1 cup cream or sour cream and the flour mixture and blend until very light and fluffy!
Bake at 375 degrees for 20 - 30 mins. Makes about 18 cupcakes.
Nothing fancy...just a simple cupcake from the past!
Imagine having this brand new spangled oven back then!
With all the latest "bells & whistles"?
Stay Cozy,
Carrie

ReplyDeleteHah, love the kitchen fog...used to get it all the time :-) I actually had a stove like that and sold it to my cousin when I remodeled. Some things like old fashion cupcakes should not be improved upon. I miss my stove :-)

Oh I have a few of my grandmas old cookbooks...love them...hugs to you my sweet friend. xoxo
ReplyDeleteI just love these old adds and recipes! Thanks for writing out the cupcake one, I think I'll try it...although I think 30 minutes would be way to long to bake a cupcake! Maybe that fancy stove didn't heat correctly back then!
ReplyDeleteHave a great day!

I'm not still enough in the kitchen to get "Kitchen Fog"! She looks like she needs a cell phone dinging, internet to check up on, a blog to update, Facebook to check, kids needing a ride to practice or friends house and gsp that she has to set up for tomorrow trip!
ReplyDeleteIs that what it's called. I've been afflicted with Kitchen Fog often. My Mom had a O'Keefe and Merrit. It had a griddle in the center we loved, and storage next to the oven.
ReplyDeletemm cupcakes :) is there anything yummier?
ReplyDeleteCarrie,
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the nice comment. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I have to tell you I just picked up a cake/cookie/cupcake decorating cook book. It just had pictures, not instructions, but it was so pretty. Eye candy really! I have so many cookbooks, most of them baking. Lots of vintage cookbooks. Some day I'll have to share them with everyone. Have a great weekend.

Happy Father's Day weekend to your family! I saw your smiling face at a friend's blog and immediately had to stop by to see what is new in your part of the country. What a funny post this is! PS The pig on the shaker sure looks like me! Always fun to visit here! Elizabeth
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun book...fun to read these days. That is one fancy stove for sure. Wouldn't that be a novel appliance to have in one's kitchen these days.
ReplyDeleteYummy cupcake. You are right cupcakes are quite the craze these days and I sure would love to have one and maybe you've reminded me to bake some too.
